Between 2017 and 2020, India’s public sector banking was reorganised through a series of mergers. Many ATMs and branches kept their old signboards for years, and map listings (including some in this directory) still use the old names. If an ATM says “Syndicate Bank” or “Andhra Bank”, this is who runs it today.
Who merged into whom
| Old bank name | Now part of | Effective date |
|---|---|---|
| State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Travancore, Bharatiya Mahila Bank | State Bank of India | 1 April 2017 |
| Dena Bank, Vijaya Bank | Bank of Baroda | 1 April 2019 |
| Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC), United Bank of India | Punjab National Bank | 1 April 2020 |
| Syndicate Bank | Canara Bank | 1 April 2020 |
| Andhra Bank, Corporation Bank | Union Bank of India | 1 April 2020 |
| Allahabad Bank | Indian Bank | 1 April 2020 |
What this means at the ATM
- An ATM with an old name is operated by the new bank. For the free-transaction count, it is “own bank” only if you bank with the bank that took it over.
- Many of these machines have since been rebranded, relocated or removed, so an old listing may point to a machine that now carries a different name.
- Complaints about these machines go to the bank that took over (and, for failed withdrawals, to the bank that issued your card).
What changed for customers of the old banks
- IFSC codes: the old codes were retired and replaced with the new bank’s codes. Payees saved with old IFSC codes need updating.
- Cards and cheque books: old debit cards and cheque books were replaced. If you find an old cheque book, do not use it.
- Account numbers: these generally stayed the same, but check your latest passbook or statement.
- Kerala note: many older SBI customers in Kerala opened their accounts with State Bank of Travancore. Those accounts and branches are all SBI now.

Common questions
My old Vijaya Bank debit card still works. Should I keep using it?
The merged banks replaced old cards, and many have expired. If yours still works, ask the branch for a new card in the current bank’s name before it stops.
Do merged-bank ATMs charge me as an “other bank” ATM?
Only if your account is with a different bank. If your account was in Vijaya Bank, an old Vijaya ATM is now a Bank of Baroda ATM, which is your own bank.
Were any private banks merged in the same years?
The list above covers the public sector consolidation. Private and cooperative bank mergers follow separate approvals and are not included here.
Last checked: October 2026, against the merger announcements of the Government of India and the banks concerned.
