SBI calls its PIN process Green PIN because it replaced the old paper PIN mailers. Whether your card is brand new or you have forgotten the PIN, you set it yourself. There are three main routes.
What you need before you start
- The debit card itself (for the ATM route) or its number.
- Your account number, all 11 digits.
- The mobile number registered with the account, switched on, because every route sends an OTP.
Route 1: at any SBI ATM
- Insert the card and choose PIN Generation on the first screen (before entering any PIN).
- Enter your 11-digit account number.
- Enter your registered mobile number and confirm.
- You receive an OTP by SMS. Some machines continue straight to the next screen; others end the session, and you re-insert the card and choose Banking → PIN Change, entering the OTP as the old PIN.
- Set a new four-digit PIN and confirm it.
This has to be done at an SBI ATM; other banks’ machines cannot generate an SBI PIN. Our listings show which machines belong to SBI, for example in Thiruvananthapuram or Bhubaneswar.
Route 2: by phone (IVR)
Call one of SBI’s toll-free numbers, such as 1800 11 2211 or 1800 425 3800, from your registered mobile, and choose the ATM/debit card services option, then PIN generation. You enter the card number and account number on the keypad. An OTP arrives by SMS, which you then use at an SBI ATM to set your own PIN (as in step 4 above). The OTP is time-limited, so use it within the validity stated in the SMS.
Route 3: online banking or the YONO app
In SBI’s internet banking, the debit card section has an option to generate a PIN instantly; in the YONO app, look under cards or service requests for setting or resetting the ATM PIN. Both confirm with an OTP and let you set the PIN without going to a machine. Menu names change from time to time, so look for “PIN” under the card options.
Choosing a PIN that protects you
- Avoid your birth year, 1234, 0000, repeated digits, or the last four digits of your mobile number.
- Do not use the same PIN as your UPI PIN.
- Never write it on the card or keep it in the same wallet.
Common questions
My card was blocked after wrong PIN attempts. Will a new PIN unblock it?
A wrong-PIN block on ATM use is usually lifted the next day. Generating a new PIN helps if you have genuinely forgotten the old one.
The OTP never arrived.
Check that the mobile number registered with the account is the one in your hand; if it has changed, it must be updated at the branch first.
Is my PIN the same as my card’s online password?
No. The ATM PIN is separate from internet banking passwords, UPI PINs and the OTPs used for online card payments.
