A surprising number of ATM visits are just to check a balance, and a surprising number of fraud losses grow because a lost card was not blocked fast enough. SBI’s SBI Quick service handles both from any mobile phone, including a basic keypad phone, as long as you use the number registered with your account.
Step 1: register once
From your registered mobile number, send an SMS in this format to 09223488888:
REG <your account number>
You receive a confirmation SMS. Registration links the service to that account; if you have several SBI accounts, register the one you use most.
Step 2: the numbers you will actually use
| What you want | What to do |
|---|---|
| Account balance | Missed call or SMS to 9223766666 |
| Mini statement (last 5 transactions) | Missed call or SMS to 9223866666 |
| Block a lost or stolen debit card | SMS BLOCK XXXX to 567676 (XXXX = last four digits of the card) |
| Switch a card channel off or on | SMS to 09223588888 (formats below) |
Card on/off: the most underused safety feature
SBI lets you switch individual uses of your debit card on and off by SMS. The format is SWOFF <channel> XXXX to turn something off and SWON <channel> XXXX to turn it back on, where XXXX is the last four digits of the card and the channel is one of:
- ATM: cash withdrawals
- POS: card payments in shops
- ECOM: online payments
- INTL: use abroad
- DOM: use within India
Only one channel can be changed per SMS. A sensible everyday setup for many people is ATM and POS on, INTL off, and ECOM on only when needed. If someone steals your card details, a switched-off channel simply declines.
Why this saves money too
At another bank’s ATM, a balance enquiry counts as one of your limited free transactions. Checking by missed call first keeps those slots for actual withdrawals. The free limits are explained in ATM charges in India.
Reporting an unauthorised transaction
Blocking the card stops further misuse; it does not report the fraud. SBI publishes separate toll-free numbers for reporting unauthorised electronic transactions, including 1800 11 1109. Report quickly, because the RBI’s liability rules depend on how soon you tell the bank (covered in ATM safety and fraud).
Common questions
Is the missed call charged?
The call disconnects automatically and the reply comes by SMS. Whether your operator charges for the SMS you send to register depends on your mobile plan.
It says my number is not registered. Why?
The service only works from the mobile number recorded in the bank’s system for that account. If you changed numbers, update it at the branch or through net banking first.
Does blocking by SMS cancel the card permanently?
Yes. A blocked card cannot be unblocked; you request a replacement. If you only misplaced it at home, use card on/off instead.
