Many bank e-corners in India hold two or three machines side by side, and the signboards do not always say which is which. Walking up to the wrong one wastes time, especially if you came to deposit cash. Here is what each machine does and how to recognise it.
The three machines
| ATM | Cash Deposit Machine (CDM) | Cash recycler (ADWM) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Withdraw cash | Yes | No | Yes |
| Deposit cash | No | Yes | Yes |
| Where deposited notes go | Not applicable | Locked in a deposit cassette until the bank empties it | Checked and can be paid out to the next customer |
| Typical label | ATM | CDM, Cash Deposit, Bunch Note Acceptor | Recycler, ADWM, Cash Deposit & Withdrawal |
How to recognise each one
- Look at the slots. An ATM has one narrow slot for notes to come out. A CDM has a wide tray that opens to take a stack of notes. A recycler has both functions behind the same opening or a tray plus a dispenser.
- Read the welcome screen. A CDM’s first screen usually offers “Cash Deposit” and “Cardless Deposit” and nothing about withdrawal. A recycler lists both deposit and withdrawal.
- Check the sticker on the fascia. Banks often put the machine ID and type on a small sticker near the screen. Note this ID down; you need it for any complaint.
Why recyclers matter to banks
A CDM fills up and must be emptied, while an ATM runs empty and must be refilled. A recycler does both jobs with the same notes, so it needs fewer cash-van visits. That is why newer bank branches are installing recyclers in place of separate ATM and CDM pairs.
Do these machines count towards free ATM transactions?
The Reserve Bank’s ATM charges rules cover cash recyclers too, except for cash deposit transactions. So a withdrawal from a recycler counts like an ATM withdrawal, but a deposit at the same machine does not use up a free ATM transaction. Deposit fees, where they apply, are set by each bank separately. For the free-transaction limits themselves, see ATM charges in 2026.
Machines that never take deposits
ATMs run by non-bank companies, known as white-label ATMs (India1, Indicash and others), are only for withdrawals and enquiries. If the only machine near you carries one of these brands, you will need a bank’s own CDM to deposit cash. The India1 guide explains how these operators work.
Machines listed with deposit facilities

- SBI ATM with Cash Deposit Machine, Aurangabad
- Punjab National Bank CDM, Prayagraj (Allahabad)
Common questions
Can I withdraw cash from a CDM if the ATM next to it is empty?
No. A pure CDM has no dispenser. Only a recycler, which does both jobs, can pay out cash.
Why does a recycler sometimes refuse to take my deposit?
When its cassettes are full, a recycler can switch off the deposit function and keep working as an ATM until it pays out enough notes to make space.
Do CDMs give change?
No. A CDM only accepts notes. It returns any notes it cannot accept, but it never pays out cash.
Last checked: October 2026. Machine types at a location can change when a bank upgrades its e-corner, so check the welcome screen when you arrive.
