ATM screens and receipts use short, bank-style messages that rarely tell you what to do next. The exact wording differs between banks and machine makers, but the meaning falls into a handful of groups. The key question for each one is the same: was my account debited? Your bank’s SMS answers that within seconds.
Problems with your account or card
| Message (typical wording) | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Insufficient funds | The balance (minus any minimum balance your bank requires) is lower than the amount requested | Check the balance by app or SMS; try a smaller amount. Some banks charge a small fee for this decline. |
| Exceeds withdrawal limit / amount limit exceeded | You crossed your card’s daily withdrawal limit, or the per-transaction limit of that machine | Try a smaller amount, or raise the limit (within your card’s maximum) in the bank’s app |
| Exceeds number of withdrawals | Your card’s daily count of withdrawals is used up | Wait until the next day, or withdraw at the branch |
| Incorrect PIN / PIN tries exceeded | Wrong PIN; after several wrong tries the card is usually blocked for ATM use for the day | Do not keep guessing. Reset the PIN through the bank (SBI: Green PIN) |
| Card expired / restricted card / card blocked | The card is past its date, or the bank (or you) blocked it or switched off ATM use | Check card on/off settings in the app; request a new card if expired |
Problems with the machine or the connection
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Unable to process / transaction cannot be completed | Something failed between the ATM, the network and your bank | Check your SMS. No debit: try another machine. Debited: follow the steps in debited but no cash |
| Issuer or switch inoperative / bank server down | Your bank’s system is not answering, often during maintenance late at night | Try again later or use a machine of your own bank |
| Unable to dispense cash / cash not available | The machine is short of notes or the dispenser failed | Use another ATM; check the SMS for a wrong debit |
| Invalid transaction / transaction not permitted | The service is not available for your card at this machine (for example, a deposit on an ATM, or a card type the machine cannot handle) | Check the machine type: CDM vs ATM vs recycler |
| Timeout / session expired | You took too long at a step | Start again; collect the card quickly or the machine may keep it (card retained) |
Deposit-machine messages
- Notes rejected / please remove unaccepted notes: some notes failed the machine’s checks. Flatten them and try once more, or take them to a counter.
- Exceeds note capacity: too many notes in one batch. Split the deposit.
- Deposit limit exceeded: the amount is above the cardless or card limit for that bank.
Three habits that prevent most problems
- Check your balance by SMS or app before going, so you never hit “insufficient funds” at another bank’s ATM, which can still count as a transaction.
- Keep the SMS alerts switched on; they are your proof if the screen and the account disagree.
- Photograph the screen when an error appears. It takes two seconds and settles most disputes.
Common questions
The receipt says “declined” but my account was debited. Who is right?
The bank’s record decides. If the debit stays after a day, raise a complaint with your bank with the receipt and the SMS.
Do failed transactions count towards my free ATM limit?
Transactions that fail for technical reasons are not supposed to be counted. Declines for your own reasons, such as low balance, may be.
